Google upgrades Keyword Planner with localized forecasting

Google Keyword Planner now has enhanced forecasting tools that let you break down keyword forecast volumes by city, region, and device type. This brings a new level of granularity to campaign planning.

Why we care. For advertisers targeting multiple locations or optimizing for specific user contexts, this update enables more precise budgeting and local strategy alignment. The ability to forecast at the municipality or DMA (Designated Market Area) level can help you identify high-performing geographic areas before launching.

Details:

  • Forecast views now include platform-level device insights – mobile, desktop, and tablet splits.
  • Users can apply filters by location type, including state, city, and DMA, tailoring forecasts to campaign objectives.
  • A visual snapshot, including pie charts of user locations (e.g., 77.4% from Amsterdam in one example), helps illustrate concentration by region.
  • Grouped keyword ideas are still available in the tool.

First seen. Screenshots shared by Amiya Prakash, PPC specialist at CausalFunnel, showed new interface panels for location breakdowns and forecast metrics, suggesting a staged or experimental rollout across select accounts.

Bottom line. While not formally announced, this Keyword Planner update could shift how advertisers build geographically targeted campaigns, bringing more data-driven clarity to localized ad strategies.
